Cafe Review: Bread Yard @ Galaxis (One-North) - Bread, HOMEMADE RASPBERRY JAM, Pancakes
Bread Yard
Have always wanted to try this cafe due to my love of bread and the positive reviews online. As the cafe caters to the working crowd, it gets crowded fast from 1130H onwards, not too sure if it is busy before 0900H as well as I arrived at around 1000H on 02/08/19.
Fun fact: This cafe started off at SUTD before shifting over to their current location at Galaxis
Updating this post, I subsequently came down on a few other occasions as well:
1) 23/08/19
2) 24/08/19
Note: Some visits may not be recorded as I may have had simply done some takeaways.
The Bread Board ($7)
(From left to right) Sourdough Rye, Sourdough Country, Hokkaido White Bread |
- Sourdough Rye: Crisp and very crunchy, Densest of the 3 breads and subtly sweet as well, very rustic bread
- Sourdough Country: Exterior had a slightly sweet glaze
- Hokkaido White bread: Most buttery, airy and light (Love this); Pairs very well with the raspberry jam and the acidic raspberries helps to cut through the rich bread
Some parts of the bread had a nice toasted caramelisation, increasing the complexity of flavours. Both the dips that came along with the bread were amazing and complemented the bread very well. The homemade raspberry jam was very thick, subtly sweet and tangy. The best raspberry jam I've tasted thus far. Meanwhile, the white miso hummus (Made with Miso, Chickpeas, Sesame, Olive oil) is earthy with a strong taste of chickpeas. The texture is expectedly a lot more grainy. Both spreads complemented each other and of course, the bread very well, elevating the dish significantly.
Price: 8/10 (Quite a significant portion was given for $7)
Taste: 9/10 (A simple yet highly delicious dish; Not 10 as I personally did not like some of the bread)
Overall: 9/10 (Must-try if you like bread)
Salted Chocolate Pistachio Tart ($4.50)
- Thick tart crust, surprisingly not too buttery
- Though you can see the pistachio shavings on top, it was noticeably absent tastewise
Taste: 8/10
Price: 8.5/10
Chai Latte ($5)
Taste: 8/10
Afterthoughts:
Highlight of the meal would definitely be The Bread Board ($7) which was immensely satisfying. Asked them if they were selling the raspberry jam after my meal and to my pleasant surprise, they are! It is going for 300g at $9.50 and can be kept in the fridge for a month. So if you're not ordering The Bread Board (Though I really recommend it), you can consider buying their jam to savour slowly at home. The cafe had lots of natural light streaming in as it was just by the side of the road leading to the carpark. Overall, loved the ambience.

Really like this cafe for its bright interior due to lots of natural lighting and its affordable and quality food offerings. Generally, I find the items on their menu much better than the variety of baked goods that they sell.
Pulled Pork Benedict ($14)
Two poached eggs, Hollandaise, Pinto bean salad, Romaine salad, Peri-peri sauce, Hokkaido brioche |
- Chilled Peri-peri sauce was slightly spicy, very refreshing, light and citrusy
- Well-seasoned and tender pulled pork
- Pinto bean salad had a hint of lemon juice added and provided earthy notes to the dish
Overall, the thick, buttery and fluffy brioche was the perfect vessel to soak up all the juices from the egg and the pulled pork. The bread was slathered with a layer of sweet chili sauce as well, tying together the savoury eggs and pulled pork.
Taste: 9/10 (Very satisfying breakfast)
Dirty Chai Latte ($6)
Thin consistency, aromatic, spicy kick at the back of your throat, cinnamon fragrance, with coffee that was not bitter.
Taste: 8.5/10
Cinnamon Bun ($3.50)
Bread was soft and moist on the inside though it is denser than normal, it is also more buttery than a typical piece of bread, similar to a croissant. A really sweet and thick coating of icing sugar on its exterior though it is definitely not as cloying as the thick gooey brown sugar glazed sticky cinnamon buns. While I like how the icing sugar provided sweet notes to the rich buttery bun, I think the bun could do without it. Perhaps a light cream cheese frosting instead? More cinnamon filling would also be appreciated
Taste: 7/10
Friday breakfast :) |
Almond croissant ($3.50)
Almond cream within the buttery croissant |
Not as crisp, chewy dense and hard. Almond notes could be stronger.
Overall, still delicious but nothing spectacular.
Taste: 6.5/10
Kouign Amaan ($3.50)
Not crispy, more chewy as well.
Very moist, buttery and sinfully delicious but again, nothing spectacular. The one I had at Starbucks previously was crispier.
Taste: 6/10
On Saturdays, Bread Yard sells their PANCAKES as well. Hence, we tried both of their unique creations - Butterscotch & Berries + Candied Bacon & Grilled Cheese.
Candied Bacon & Grilled Cheese pancake ($12)
Huge slabs of sweet and saltish candied bacon were placed on top 2 thick pieces of pancakes before being wrapped in cheese. The rich porky bacon complemented the light grilled cheese very well. The bacon was very caramelised and was nicely charred. Below the pancakes was a piece of fried egg and surrounding the entire dish was a layer of grated parmesan cheese. Small portion of maple syrup was also served at the side for an added sweetness to the savoury dish. Overall, all the flavours worked really well with one another and though it is definitely a very sinful dish, it was immensely satisfying. My only gripe would be that the pancakes here are a bit too dense.
Taste: 9.5/10 (For immense satisfaction)
Butterscotch & Berries pancake ($12)
2 thick pancakes garnished with bits of pistachio, slightly saltish and really thick butterscotch sauce, fresh berries (Strawberries, Blueberries) and a side of maple syrup. A very lovely dish that was sweet and slightly tart. I think this paled in comparison to the bolder Candied Bacon & Grilled Cheese pancake. While I would have preferred more butterscotch sauce to balance the tartness of the fresh fruits, it is still a very enjoyable and definitely a lighter alternative to the other pancake option. Unfortunately, the pancakes here were similarly too dense and could have been fluffier.
Taste: 8/10
Hot chocolate ($4.50)
Rich and a darker version than others that I've tried
Taste: 8.5/10
Cappuccino ($4.50)
Smooth, hardly bitter
(Did not try enough for a review)
Lovely Saturday breakfast |

Shakshuka with Mushrooms ($14)
Red Peppers, Tomatoes, Two eggs, Mushrooms (Instead of Salsicca pork sausage), Feta cheese, Chives, Hokkaido Brioche |
Thick cuts of brioche |
Hokkaido brioche was crisp and crunchy on the outside but moving nearer towards the middle, it could have been more fluffy and airy (Was dense and chewy). Overall, lots of flavour just not something that I will eat.
Taste: 6.5/10
