Food Day (Golden Mile Hawker tour, 88 HK Roast & more) 22/06/19

Today was an extremely long, eventful and thoroughly enjoyable food day. But I think it is because of it that I fell sick :/
Summary of the day:
Golden Mile Food Centre > Thai Baang Bakery > 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist > Brotherbird Milk & Croissant > Keong Saik Bakery

To start, I made my way over to Golden Mile Food Centre again as it truly has a great diversity of food. Originally, I intended to order the briyani from a nearby food centre but the queue told me that my food tour at Golden Mile Food Centre does not end here. So upon entering the hawker centre, I went straight for the curry rice stall before going to order from the famous Fei Zhu Traditional Teochew Handmade Fishball & Minced Meat Noodle. This... is where I will be sharing a very important life lesson. Never, and I mean never, leave your food unattended at a table and proceed to order from another stall. Forces of nature (Those pesky black birds) will come to steal your food and a very angry cleaning auntie will come to reprimand you afterwards, the end result being:
1) No Curry Rice :(
2) Becoming $3 poorer
3) Having an unhappy start to the day

As I was determined to satisfy my curry rice again, I ordered another set, costing me a grand total of $6 for my curry rice. :/
Oh yes, decided to try another product from SL II Muffin, their chocolate cheese tart ($1.60) as well.

Main Course(s)

Dessert (Chocolate Cheese tart)

Golden Mile Curry Rice Stall #01-110

Pork Chop Curry Rice Set ($3)
- Comes with curry chap chye/mixed vegetables, pork chop, fried egg
- Pork chop thicker than usual and very crunchy
- Curry was spicy and thick; very aromatic
- Curry was less sweet relative to others, more for those who really want to satisfy their cravings for something spicy
- My fried egg was unfortunately slightly overcooked hence the yolk did not ooze out
Overall, a value-for-money curry rice stall that is worth going if you are in the area
Taste: 7.5/10
Price: 9/10
Overall: 8/10
Pork Chop Set ($3)

Fei Zhu Traditional Teochew Handmade Fishball & Minced Meat Noodle

Minced Meat Noodle; Mee Pok ($5)
- For their $5 and $6 options, their ingredients come in a separate bowl filled with pork broth
- Pork broth was very rich and hearty
- Contained fishballs, fishcakes, liver, prawns, pork slices, lettuce, minced pork, 1 Teochew fish dumpling
- Good spice to the noodles but thought that it could have been springier and that there could have been more flavour
- Fishball tasted fresh and was bouncy; no fishy flavour
Overall, broth was the star (Finished the entire thing) but felt that the noodles was only average
Price: 8/10
Taste: 8/10
Overall: 8/10
Bak Chor Mee; Minced Meat Noodle ($5)

Fantastic pork broth

SL II Muffin

Chocolate cheese tart ($1.60)
- Very very thick and creamy cream cheese topping
- Because cream cheese topping was used, this tart is very tangy and felt that the chocolate added little to no sweetness to the tart to balance out the cream cheese filling
Overall, stick to their egg tarts and coconut tarts (Both selling at $1.20 each)
Price: 6/10
Taste: 5/10
Overall: 5/10

Moving on from Golden Mile Food Centre, I made my way towards 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist as I am on a hunt to compare all the raved roast meat shops in town. On my way there though, I passed by a lovely bakery, Thai Baang Bakery which sells extraordinarily soft and fluffy Thai bread (Apparently the first Thai bread bakery in SG according to Eatbook).

I got their signature Banana Chocolate Bread and was immensely satisfied with my decision...

Thai Baang Bakery

Banana Chocolate Bread ($1.80)
- Very fluffy and soft bread
- Filled with chunks of sweet banana and semi sweet chocolate filling
- The use of semi-sweet chocolate shone through here as it helped to balance out the natural sweetness from both the bread and the banana
Overall, truly a signature item and a must-try
Price: 9.5/10
Taste: 10/10
Overall: 9.5/10

Finally reaching 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist at about 1300H, I actually considered skipping the stall as by this time I had eaten quite a lot and I was right in the middle of the lunch crowd... but the foodie in me chose to brave the queue and after about 15min (Queue moved quite fast), I got my order. :))
Front of the stall
(Oh yes, the female cashier was really nice as when she saw me sweating profusely when I was at the front, she handed me a few pieces of tissue to dry myself)

88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist

Roasted Pork Char Siew Rice + Char Siew ($7)
- Sambal was sweet but spicier than most, numbing sensation on tongue; Do not go crazy on the sambal
- Char siew had a strong caramelisation all around and a melt-in-your-mouth tender bite. Every single piece of char siew was well caramelised and the pieces of char siew here were fattier than other stalls making it much more satisfying and sinful
- Roasted pork here must have been the best out of all the roast meat stalls I have tasted in SG thus far. The skin truly had a biscuit-like crust and a good proportion of tender meat and fat meant that immediately after the satisfying crunch from the skin, the meat and fat would melt in your mouth
- Generous sweet sauce coated every grain of rice complementing the saltish flavours of the meat really well
Price: 7/10
Taste: 9.5/10
Overall: 8.5/10

Okay, I must clarify that at this point, while I did order from Brotherbird Milk & Croissant, I did NOT eat it immediately and brought it back home to share it with my family. The stall sells a variety of croissants with different fillings inside. It is a rather small stall that you are sure to miss out on if you do not know it exists. Located within CT Hub 2, you will have to walk down an alley lined with rows of shops before reaching it. From the mouth of the alley, you will not be able to see the stall so just have faith and walk down the alley slowly.

Selection of croissants available

Brotherbird Milk & Croissant

Seasonal flavour - Peanut Butter & Jam ($5)
- Croissant was sliced in half before peanut butter and jam was added to the croissant
- Topped with a sweet crust (Not too sure what this was) and sliced peanuts
- Hearty and comforting; Don't think one can go wrong with peanut butter & jam
- Croissant was chewy and not airy
Overall, thought that this was pretty average
Price: 5/10
Taste: 7/10
Overall: 5.5/10
PB&J Croissant ($5)

Earl grey ($5)
- Topped with a rounded tempered chocolate
- Loaded with sweet earl grey cream that made this croissant thoroughly enjoyable to eat though very messy as well
- While the croissant here was chewy and not that airy as well, the balance of texture and flavours from the cream and the croissant helped to elevate the pastry
Overall, will recommend to those who enjoy all things earl grey
Price: 7/10
Taste: 8.5/10

Earl Grey Croissant ($5)

Okay so as I did not eat the croissants immediately (Was quite full and there was no place to sit), I decided to head back to Outram Park to have dessert at Keong Saik Bakery. The bakery itself has a lovely homely ambience but can only fit about 10 - 15 pax at a time so try not to come when it is too crowded. When I arrived at around 1430H, there were only about 5 people eating at the cafe.

Keong Saik Bakery

'Sor Hei' ($4)
- A black and white danish pastry with layers of chocolate chips embedded into it
- Crispy, buttery with a hint of cashew nuts; I am not entirely sure if they actually added any but there was definitely a nutty aftertaste to the pastry
- Subtle semi-sweet chocolate flavour
- Good to pair with their coffee and (I'm not kidding) to dip in soft-boiled eggs
Price: 7/10
Taste: 6.5/10
Overall: 6.5/10
'Sor Hei' ($4)

Matcha salted egg cruffin ($4.90)
- The cruffin itself was very crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside
- The top was also subtly sweet due to the powdered sugar, making it slightly more enjoyable to eat
- When I first tasted the filling, I must admit that it was quite bizarre and had no idea what I was tasting. After awhile though, it was quite addictive and the sweet salted egg taste was very distinct with a matcha aftertaste to end the entire experience
Overall, quite enjoyable if you like salted egg
Price: 7/10
Taste: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10
